Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of institutional psychiatric provision as it negotiated time and discourse between the 1890 Lunacy Act and the 1930 Mental Treatment Act. Nineteenth-century psychiatric generalisations were based on the prevention of wrongful detention and resulted in the development of the legalistic 1890 Lunacy Act. By the 1920s an alternative generalisation was emerging, one of access to treatment for mental illness without the stigma of certification.
