Utilising the rhodium catalysed carbenoid cyclisation of diazo ester we envisaged the formation of the tetracycle useful for the hypothesised ring opening to the cyclopropanone. Synthesis and reaction of several diazo species resulted in alternate reactions to the proposed cyclopropanation, producing instead amongst other products, a novel lactam.
