Abstract:
This thesis interrogates the role of the Psalter in female-authored devotional poetry published in manuscript and print between 1560 and 1660. Scholars have established that early modem women writers drew upon the biblical Book of Psalms to overcome contemporary constrictions on female authorship. This thesis seeks to build upon current understanding of women's adoption and adaptation of psalmic discourse by conceptualising a female poetics of psalmody.
