Abstract:
It is known that the spec~fi~ crystallographic fonn of inorganic crystalline materials can detennine their physico-chemical properties. However, until now, a predictive link between morphology, habit and functionality has not been systematically investigated. In order to study this, a well-defined directory of crystallographic fonns ofcalcium carbonate have been produced in order to correlate their crystallographic properties with certain physical and chemical parameters.This directory of crystallographic fonns of CaC03 was acquired using soluble additives to modify growth. Two types of additive were used: (1) surface adsorbents, such as orthophosphate, malonic acid, polyalcohols, (2) metal dopants. Both types of additive induced changes in the lflymorphic fonn (calcite, aragonite, vaterite), morphology and habit.
