Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis focuses on some networking and technological issues concer.ning the deployment and implementation of optical packet switching technology in future optical transport network. In particular it focuses on the design and implementation of high-performance edge optical packet switched routers and the associated hardware mechanisms and software algorithms. First, an overview of next generation optical networks is presented, addressing the drivers and requirements towards the realisation of future optical packet switched networks. Then the concept of optical packet switching is described with a detailed investigation of the main networking issues for its implementation.
