Abstract:
The aim of the research was to discover how girls made decisions about potential motherhood and other significant issues through an exploration of the social contexts of girls' lives in two United Kingdom secondary schools. To achieve this aim it was important to seek tile girls' voices through the . use of an interpretative approach that was commensurate with liberal feminist values and research approaches. A combination of grounded theory, feminist and reflective methodology and methods facilitated this. The data collection consisted of nine focus groups with girls of twelve and thirteen years and thirteen individual interviews with girls of sixteen years. In addition, five school nurses and four· teachers were interviewed to explore some of the health and educational aspects of the girls' lives in more detail. The contents of the focus groups and interviews were analysed and the findings thoroughly challenged and evaluated by using the grounded theory methods of open coding, categorising and constant comparison, to develop a coherent theory. Integral to the analysis was the critical review of an extensive selection of literature. A synthesis of the results produced a decision-making model and the grounded theory that 'girls make considered decisions, based on the best knowledge and evidence they have'. Most girls showed considerable self-awareness and appreciation of the challenges and intricacies that the evidence presented for them, and they responded individually to this. There appeared to be less understanding of the influence of the structural aspects of social environment. The girls' decisionmaking incorporated a complex pattern of help and hindrances, which included their relationships within school, society and with family and friends. Recommendations are made for greater understanding of girls' decision-making capability in schools and wider society and for developing the school nurse role into an important source of support for the girls.
