Abstract:
The submission consists of a portfolio of eight original compositions and written commentary. The commentary addresses my aesthetic and creative processes, and 'their relationship to compositional materials and technological boundaries; the role of the score and diffusion practice. The underlying ratiOIiale for the portfolio is the importance of gesture as a structuring device. It is the application of gestu~e that demonstrates how my style has developed during the portfolio's production. The commentary does not discuss each piece in tum, but draws on them for examples that relate to my research aims. For example, Dimensions (2000), Sax? (2002) and Holiday Snap 2002: A Sonic Document (2002) are discussed in relationship to score. Discussions relating to Excursions C?002) and Fundamental Manoeuvre (2003) serve to illustrate my research into gestural articulation through the notion of sonic modulation. Submarine (2001) addresses how extra-musical materials may be used in conjunction with gestural applications to produce sonic metaphor. The final pieces, Rubicon Drift (2004) and Swan Song (2007) mark my' return to working with performers to elicit sonic materials that are rich in gestural qualities. Further to this, Swan Song demonstrates how the composition process can be extended to include multi-channel technology (5.1 surround sound). The portfolio also feeds into discussions relating to diffusion practice. All of the pieces have had public performances and I have included details about these in appendix 5.
