Abstract:
The use of wet fill for constructing highway embankments has been investigated from the viewpoints of the designer, the contractor and the construction engineer. Present and past specifications used to control selection and compaction of embankment material have been reviewed to determine their adequacy for the problem. The wetness index concept has been proposed as a specification for selection and control of embankment material. The relevance to embankment design of wetness index has been assessed from the stability and compressibility aspects. Some major contributions to the field of terramechanics have been reviewed. A critical tyre inflation pressure concept has been postulated. Both laboratory and full scale field tests have been used to evaluate this postulation
