This thesis explores socio-cultural factors that influence sex education (SE), drawing on northern perspectives, including feminist ethnography to study a pedagogy and curriculum to tackle health issues such as Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Acquired (HIV/AIDS). As a health education professional working within higher education in the UK, but having grown up in Guyana and worked in the Caribbean, I have undertaken a case study of the socio-cultural factors that influence sex education in Guyana, especially amongst women. For the title of this thesis I use the main theme of a Guyanese folk song, which verbalizes women's unconditional sexual availability to men. This thesis examines the relationship between formal and informal sex education and the socio-cultural practices among men and women in the Caribbean. I focus on some deeply embedded social-sexual practices such as multiple sexual partner relationships (MSPRs), transactional sex (TS), and gender violence (GV). Caribbean women, despite their high levels of education have learnt cultural sexual scripts through formal and informal SE. This may result in their disempowerment, making them vulnerable to potentially fatal diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Using Guyana as a case study for the wider Caribbean region, the thesis compares ongoing informal sex education contained in Queh Queh messages and Calypso. It analyses their role in the context of the existing gendered power dynamics. The case is made for effective sex education, which takes cognisance of these norms, knowledge about sexual intercourse, the erotic, sexual feelings, relationships, and feminist values. This thesis highlights the need for further SE research within the specific cultural context.
