Education for world understanding : an estimate of the impact on the secondary schools of England and Wales in 1964 of its influences since 1945
The purpose of this study is first to determine and to describe what have been the major influences promoting education for world understanding among the secondary schools of England and Wales since 1945 and, secondly, to estimate what has been the impact of those influences in 1964. Part I traces the evolution of nationalism and internationalism and the growth of the world community with particular reference to the place of Britain in that community. It describes the general response of education to the development of international relations and more specifically develops the hypothesis that secondary education in England and Wales has adjusted to the changing role of Britain in world affairs since 1945. The work of a number of different organizations and bodies which have promoted world understanding in England and Wales is examined in Part II to determine their origins and aims, the nature and extent of their work, the growth and development of their activities and the relative influence that they have brought to bear individually and collectively upon the system. Part III provides an estimate of the impact upon the schools of these cumulative influences, the assessment being made in terms of the structure of curricula, the quality and character of the day-to-day life of the schools, the nature of extra-curricular activities and the content of history and geography syllabuses. The survey shows that in response to national and world-wide political, economic and social changes, the secondary schools are not only becoming more aware of the changed position of Britain since 1945, but also more conscious of their responsibilities towards the evolving world community.
