Christian Hebraists in sixteenth-century England.
The period examined in the thesis, as indicated by
the title, is the sixteenth century. In reality, and more
precisely, the period opens in 1524 when Robert Wakefield's
first work was published and closes with the publication of
the Authorised Version of the Bible in 1611, which, - though a
seventeenth-century work, is, in effect, the consummation of
sixteenth-century scholarship. Similarly, scholars whose
works were produced in the early years of the seventeenth
century, but whose scholarship derives from studies begun
in the sixteenth are included as contributors to the Hebrew
scholarship of this period. In the ninth chapter, Hebrew
studies in Scotland and Ireland are reviewed in association
with the activities at their universities.
