Selected aspects of cartel stability : (with reference to UK data).
The thesis examines the nature of cartel stabilit y by
trying to complement standard economic analysis with
evidence of the institutional detail surrounding such
solutions to the problem of oli g opolistic interdependence.
Firstly, the thesis discusses the raison d'etre of cartels
as well as the factors responsible for their characteristic
instability. Secondly, a systematic anal ysis is presented
of the data found in the files at the Office of Fair
Trading of oligopolistic agreements registered under the
1956 Restrictive Trade Practices Act. Finally, the thesis
will describe and analyse in the context of the prior
discussion, the outcome, in the case of eight cartels that
successfully passed through the Restrictive Trade Practices
