Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the construction and validation of a battery of performance-based English Language progress tests. The work is set in the context of a language teaching institute. The relationship of teaching and testing and the need for a greater degree of integration of the two as well as a greater focus on the training of teachers in testing principles and methods is a primary concern in the first part of the thesis. This is followed by a discussion of the strategies employed to overcome these problems, and a detailed description of the procedures adopted in the design of the test battery. A hierarchical approach to the construct validation of performance-based tests is then proposed and the results of the validation procedures adopted discussed in detail.
