Abstract:
Twenty species of the genus Solanum from the Arabian Peninsula were studied taxonomically. Data from hybridization studies, chemistry, multivariate studies, cytology, seed germination and phytogeography were used with morphological evidence in elucidating the taxonomy of the genus. A taxonomic account of the genus Solanum for the Flora of the Arabian Peninsula was prepared for the first time. The Arabian species are distributed between three subgenera, Solanum, Leptostemonum and Potatoe, in nine sections. A dichotomous key to the species, based on field characters, was provided and infrageneric and infraspecific classifications were given. One new species was recognised in this study, S. asiriacum.
