A critical edition of Kitab Al-Mihan by (Abu al-Arab) Muhammed b. Ahmad al-Tamimi (d.333/944)
This thesis is a critical edition of Kitib al-Mihan of Abü al-
`Arab Muhammad b. Ahmad b. TamIm al-Tamimi (d. 333/944). It is in two
The first part contains an introduction in which information about
the author's life, education, teachers and students is presented. This
information shows that Abu al- `Arab al-Tamimi was a highly respectable
personality in al-Qayrawän, a man of knowledge in Mislim Law and history
as well as an adherent to the Mal4kite madhhab.
In this part there is also a discussion about this book in
manuscript form and sources mentioning it. This book deals mainly with
the Muaiim martyrolgy and necrology and is the only surviving account
of its kind in Islamic History. It consists of five parts. The first
part records some Prophetic traditions and reports emphasising the
virtues of perseverance in times of suffering. This applied especially
to the Prophets and faithful Muslims, who might be particularly
vulnerable to strife and disunity.
The second part is the most important and useful one. Its
importance lies in the author's attempt to trace the reasons which
caused the battle of al-Harra and in his attempt to give an almost
complete account about those who had been killed in that battle.
The rest of the book, i. e. parts three, four and five, is devoted
mainly to men who were flogged, imprisoned, poisoned, crucified or
faced the inquisition, ar n, by the rulers themselves or by their
representatives in different parts of the ) lim World at that time.
Abu al- `Arab
reported about different personalities from the early
stages of the Islamic history until the author's life time. Finally, footnotes for this introduction are given.
The second part comprises the Arabic text of Kitäb al-Mikan,
followed by the footnotes relevant to it.
